DÉCOR FOR A PENTHOUSE TERRACE
Architect and interior designer Richa Wadhwa explains how the right blend of design and accessories creates the perfect terrace retreat.
A Terrace in a penthouse is like a crown. A well-designed terrace increases living space, add value and style to a property. Distinct design and installation are necessary to ensure an outdoor living space that adds both value and utility.
Crafting the design
Whether the terrace is big or small, creative and unique atmosphere of relaxation can be created. The flooring for the terrace is usually made of solid surface, like stone, concrete or interlocking brick. Great designs can be made by using variety of materials. These designs create harmony, unity and act as a natural outdoor extension of the home. The terrace should be designed in such a way that suits the style of the home. A house with a formal appearance, such as Georgian or Federal, would look best with a symmetrical layout made from materials that are regular in appearance. A casual house could employ designs in rustic, natural stone or gravel.
Colors
The color of the materials used in the terrace design should harmonize with the outside of the house. Concrete grays and charcoals suit most homes and add value to the property. Smaller stones or interlocking bricks create a busier looking terrace, especially against homes made of siding or brick. Tumbled stones have softer edges and appear aged and weathered, which adds an old-world aura to most designs. Poured concrete has a hard edge and works best with modern exteriors, though its appearance can be softened with stamping or curved borders and flower beds. Pea gravel, popular in French designs, needs a strong border and occasional top ups.
Furniture
Garden chairs and sofas with cushions and pillows, chaise loungers make the space comfortable and relaxing. Candles, lanterns and flowers placed on the table create a dramatic and romantic glow. Right color combination of the fabrics (suitable for outdoor use) for terrace furniture is very important for calm and soothing environment.
Garden
A penthouse Terrace is just the place for flower garden. Large plants in large pots, plenty of blooming flowers and a few small potted plants around them can make the place look ethereal. The use of cascading flowers makes a beautiful façade. Vines are great for decoration because they can cover the walls that create corners like climbing flowers on special struts. Small fountain with flowers and other accessories can make the place look highly impressive.
Lighting
Go in for soft lights. Wall lights, both downlighters and uplighters, lanterns, candles, tea lights contribute to an ideal terrace setting. Top it up with an open bar.
Turn your penthouse terrace into an enchanted chill out zone for family and friends.
