Smart Ways Of Utilizing Space
SPACE SAVING DESIGNS AND OPTIONS IN A HOME
Storage is mostly limited in small homes. No matter how small a home is, if the storage is planned and designed carefully, every inch of the space can be made useful and can make the home look spacious.
Planning the wardrobes carefully help in utilizing every nook and corner of the space judiciously. Right proportion and combination of hanging space, shelves and drawers help in creating organized storage space. Lofts are useful to store items not used often.
The space under the bed can be a great place to use as storage. This space can be used for seasonal and less frequently-used items. The different types of under bed storage boxes, bins, containers, and drawers contribute to this kind of storage. An under bed slide out rack is one of the best ways to go. These racks can slide all the way out thus providing comfortable access to the storage. Side tables with one or two drawers provide storage space for frequently used items.
TV unit should be designed in such a way that it accommodates all necessary elements. Mounting TV and speakers on wall saves lot of surface space of the TV Unit. This space can be used to store other items. Multiple drawers and shelves maximize the holding capacity of the unit.
Niches and cubby holes are perfect for displaying lamps, artefacts etc. Wall ledges avoid the need for making separate storage for holding magazines, CDs etc. thus saving floor space.
Couches made with built-in drawers hidden beneath the seat cushions is another great space-saving idea. For a wall with a window, a little window seat instantly turns what might have been dead space into a concealed storage besides proving seating next to the window.
Space saving storage in kitchen can be accomplished with the use of overhead units and wall shelves. Tall Unit is another great option. A built-in microwave, or microwave kept inside the cabinet frees up precious counter space. Roll out shelves double usable space and can be fitted to fill awkward corners. A built-in rubbish bin saves floor space. Kitchen soffit can be replaced with high cabinets useful for storing infrequently used items.
Overhead units and wall ledges in the study area can be a great place to keep books, stationary etc., thus freeing up desk surface space.
A wall cubby hole in the bathroom creates more storage space for bath and hand towels neatly rolled up and piled one atop the other. Vanity storage under the wash basin adds to precious storage space.
A spiral staircase is a compact alternative to a traditional one to conserve floor space.
A pocket door slides between the walls, allowing furniture to be placed where other type of doors would swing out into the room. It saves space and has a tidy, tailored look.
A wall hinged or foldable bed can be hidden away into a wall unit thus acts as a convenient space saver for guest rooms and small apartments. Similarly, wall mounted foldable dining table and iron board maximizes space when not in use.
Use of multi-purpose furniture like sofa cum bed and futons serves in making the room spacious.
For kids’ room, bunk beds are great space savers as they leave room for other furniture and play space for kids. A well designed bunk bed with multiple drawers and other storage bits provides ample of storage space for toys, clothes, books etc.
Installing shelves about 18 inches below the ceiling in a child’s bedroom to display infrequently used toys not only adds to aesthetics but also makes space for such toys that kids don’t use often.
Study table with ample of drawers, shelves and shuttered storage becomes the multi-functional piece of furniture providing plenty of space for storing books, stationary etc. and neat and clutter-free working surface.
